Russian oil exports to China through Kazakhstan’s pipeline system have remained steady throughout 2024, according to data from KazTransOil, Kazakhstan’s pipeline operator.
From January to November, the volume of oil transported from Russia to China via KazTransOil’s network totaled 9,117,000 tons. This figure represents a marginal decrease of 0.25% compared to the 9,140,000 tons recorded during the same period in 2023, as detailed in the company’s report on export and transit oil shipments for the first 11 months of this year.
In December, KazTransOil plans to deliver 862,000 tons of Russian oil to China, maintaining its steady flow of shipments.
Discussions between Russia and Kazakhstan regarding an increase in oil and gas exports to China have been ongoing. During a state visit to Astana, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the potential for expanding these energy routes.
“We explored the idea of developing additional pathways for transporting our oil and gas to other countries, particularly to China, using Kazakhstan’s territory as one of the possible options,” Putin said, as per the Kremlin’s official English translation.
He emphasized the strategic importance of such projects, stating, “These routes are highly attractive and hold great potential. They will undoubtedly contribute to stabilizing the global economy, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, while providing us with new opportunities for market engagement.”
China has become a crucial export market for Russia’s energy sector, particularly after Gazprom ceased most of its gas deliveries to Europe. The Russian gas giant has confirmed that its natural gas exports to China through the Power of Siberia pipeline have reached the pipeline’s full annual capacity of 38 billion cubic meters.
Since its launch in late 2019, the Power of Siberia pipeline has steadily increased its flows, now operating at maximum capacity, underscoring the growing energy partnership between Russia and China.
