According to WPB, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), a prominent entity in India’s public sector shipbuilding industry, has commenced the steel-cutting phase for the second hybrid-electric Service Operation Vessel (SOV) being developed for the UK-based North Star Shipping Ltd., a key player in the offshore wind energy domain.
This significant milestone was marked in a formal ceremony attended by North Star’s Chief Technology Officer, James Bradford, who initiated the cutting of the steel plate. The event was witnessed by CSL’s Director of Finance, Jose V. J., Executive Director of Shipbuilding, Harikrishnan S., senior company officials, and representatives from the classification society DNV.
The vessel under construction is an 86-meter SOV conceived by VARD AS, a Norwegian design firm. It represents the second unit in a pair of vessels being developed by CSL for North Star Shipping. The hybrid-electric ship is designed to meet the operational demands of offshore wind farms, integrating high-capacity lithium-ion battery systems alongside diesel-driven generators supplied by Yanmar. This dual-power setup ensures greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact, aligning with the global transition toward greener maritime technologies.
Built to DP2 class standards, the vessel incorporates advanced features such as the SMST Walk-to-Work system, enabling safe personnel transfers between the ship and offshore wind installations. The vessel will accommodate up to 80 personnel, including technicians and crew members, and will serve multifunctional roles including accommodation, logistics, and turbine maintenance support.
With its hybrid propulsion system and advanced onboard facilities, this vessel is expected to transform offshore wind service operations and contribute meaningfully to sustainable maritime infrastructure in the renewable energy sector.
