The December issue of the World of Petroleum and Bitumen
To maximize the benefits from the newly launched bitumen processing facility in Tema, located in the Greater Accra region, the CEO and Group Managing Director of GOIL Ghana PLC, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh, has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to halt the importation of bitumen into Ghana.
During the inauguration event, Mr. Prempeh stressed the importance of implementing and enforcing a policy that mandates road contractors to purchase bitumen from local suppliers.
He further emphasized the need to discourage the current practice of granting tax exemptions to contractors importing bitumen.
Mr. Prempeh also highlighted the potential advantages for Ghana if actions are taken to prevent the entry of substandard bitumen into the market.
He urged the President to take all necessary steps to block the illegal importation of bitumen, which undermines the country’s revenue generation.
The processing facility, a collaborative project between GOIL PLC and Côte d'Ivoire's Société Multinationale de Bitumes (SMB), has a storage capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes and will convert base bitumen from Côte d'Ivoire into premium polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) and bitumen emulsions.
