State Company Avtodor has led the way with the use of recycled asphalt concrete (RAP) in Russian road construction, WPB states. Some 245,000 tons of recovered asphalt mixtures have been utilized on Avtodor's road network in the past three years alone, a watershed moment towards resource and environmental protection.
Avtodor's Head of Technical Policy and Innovative Technologies, Konstantin Mogilny, emphasized that the long-term company policy pays a special focus on the mass use of recycled materials in road construction. The recycling asphalt is primarily used in base courses and asphalt mixtures, which significantly reduces the dependence on natural aggregates. Not only is this saving on production costs but also mitigating the environmental impact from quarrying and waste material dumping.
Mogilny also added that recycled asphalt concrete is already a common material for the construction, reconstruction, and large-scale renovation of highways. The corporation will try to increase the share of recycled material in asphalt mix to approximately 30% within the next three years. For this purpose, Avtodor already developed advanced methods and technologies for processing and handling reclaimed asphalt in order to make it ready for application on high-speed roads in performance and safety.
Apart from technological innovation, Avtodor has launched specialized professional training and development programs to equip engineers and technicians with the necessary information required to utilize recycled asphalt appropriately. The step is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and eco-friendly growth in the highway construction sector.
Using reclaimed material offers a number of benefits — it conserves natural resources, reduces production costs, and unloads the issue of waste stock from old pavements. By maximizing the use of recycled asphalt, Russia's road-building industry is headed toward a vision of circular economy, where efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement are interconnected.
In conclusion, Avtodor's innovative application of recycled asphalt gives a good example of sustainable development of infrastructure. The initiatives not only help maintain the environment but also ensure the long-term economic and technological sustainability of the transport system in the country.
